Read NowIn a recent development this June 2024, the Supreme Council for Media Regulation (the “Supreme Media Council”) has announced that all digital platforms and websites operating without a license from the council will face blocking within three months of the announcement, dated 8th June 2024. This move, as stated by the President of the Media Council, aims to legalize the status of such platforms, safeguard Egyptian content viewers, and bring structure to e-commerce platforms operating within Egypt.
Furthermore, the Supreme Media Council has initiated communication with the Central Bank of Egypt to halt all bank transfers to the accounts of unlicensed websites and platforms that operate outside the required legal framework, thereby violating Egyptian laws.
This heightened scrutiny follows a recent incident in Egypt involving content on a digital platform that was deemed to contravene religious beliefs in the country. Consequently, the Supreme Media Council labeled this content as prohibited and mandated its immediate removal.
Our Egypt office’s team of experts is well-equipped to provide comprehensive guidance on various aspects, including understanding licensing requirements as per relevant laws, navigating the licensing process to obtain necessary permits, and ensuring compliance with content regulations.
