Biography

Philip Biggs is a Senior Counsel in the Innovation, Patents & Industrial Property (3IP) practice, based in Abu Dhabi.

Philip has a background in mechanical design engineering and worked in industry for over ten years before qualifying as a patent attorney. Philip advises a range of clients on their IP needs, including large corporations, universities, and early-stage businesses. Philip has a particular interest in the healthcare, transportation, energy, and IT sectors.

Philip is experienced in managing global patent portfolios and has been involved with oppositions and appeals at the European Patent Office. He is conversant with the differing requirements of the patent offices in the US, Europe, China, Korea, and Japan.

His practice also includes advising on third-party patent rights (freedom-to-operate) and providing opinions on validity and infringement. He also has experience in supporting government intellectual property projects in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Prior to joining Al Tamimi & Company, Philip worked as a patent attorney in Dubai and previously spent nearly a decade in private practice in London – first in the IP department of an international law firm and then at an IP firm that specialises in patent prosecution and litigation. Before that, Philip trained in the patent department of one of the world’s leading aerospace companies.

  • Performing invention harvesting for a well-known global logistics company in respect of a revolutionary port equipment management system; preparing, filing, and prosecuting the large number of patent applications that resulted from the harvesting exercise.
  • Advising a Chinese-based green energy start-up on strategy for protecting their innovations using the international patent system.
  • Advising on international patent office practice and patent and design laws on a strategic planning project for a Saudi government agency.
  • Preparing patentability opinions, along with drafting and prosecuting resulting patent applications for patent portfolios for GCC-based universities.
