Ali Al Dabbagh is an associate in the litigation and corporate commercial departments in Baghdad. Ali is also a member of the Iraqi Bar association and a New York Attorney.
Ali has transactional experience advising on many oil & gas matters, , partnerships, commercial agencies (distributorships, sales representative agreements, and franchise arrangements), as well as other forms of setting up business in Iraq or exporting to Iraq. In addition, Ali has experience in healthcare, investment, telecommunications, and government procurement. Ali also has experience with compliance, data protection, and Oil and gas. Ali’s recent experience involves advising on choice of non-Iraqi law, drafting and reviewing partnerships, distributorships, and other contracts, and advising on disputes of this nature.
Ali has experience in international commercial litigation and transactions. Ali currently works on a multi-million-dollar construction litigation over an oil refinery involving multiple international parties and a parallel consolidated ICC arbitration proceeding. Ali also frequently works on Iraqi litigation cases where foreign law has to be applied by Iraqi courts or arbitration is raised as a defense.
Ali also has particular expertise in international commercial arbitration. Ali has an LLM degree from the University of Pittsburgh which has a particularly strong international arbitration program. During his LLM, Ali drafted a thesis on resolving Investor-State disputes in Iraq and was awarded the Cali award for Academic excellence in International Business Transactions. Prior to joining Al Tamimi Ali worked on analyzing and finding gaps in the Iraqi investment legal framework, particularly Iraq’s international commitments.
Ali represented the University of Baghdad in the Willem-C Vis Moot for three years. The VIS Moot is the largest and most prestigious moot court competition for law students and is used by the UNCITRAL to promote the New York Convention on Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitration Awards and the UN Convention on International Sale of Goods convention. Ali was awarded the best oralist award at the middle east pre moots twice and the team memos he helped draft won best memo awards twice.
