Jalal Kudsi is a Special Counsel in the Litigation Department of Al Tamimi & Company’s Abu Dhabi office specializing in litigation and arbitration of international and local legal disputes arising in, among other things, the commercial, banking, construction, health and insurance industries. Jalal has been a practicing as an advocate and legal advisor in Abu Dhabi since 1981. He currently advises clients in cases before all levels of the UAE’s local and federal courts, both civil and commercial.
Jalal represented a number of UAE government entities and other international organizations including: the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA), the Department of Finance of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi Government, the Abu Dhabi Investment Company (Invest AD) and the Arab Monetary Fund. He also previously represented the Department of Private Affairs of His Highness Late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan from 1982 to 2004. He has acted on behalf of the foregoing entities in major litigation matters inside and outside the UAE. In addition, Jalal was the head of the legal committee of the BCCI majority shareholders (certain Abu Dhabi government entities) from 1993 until the completion of the BCCI case.
Jalal represents local and international banks, financial institutions, insurance companies, major international corporations and contractors, and prominent UAE businesses and individuals, including: First Abu Dhabi Bank, Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank, Emirates Insurance Company and Hyundai Engineering and Construction. He also represented Standard Chartered Bank, the British Bank of the Middle East (HSBC) and Balfour Beatty in major litigation matters.
As a former member of the Emirates Banks Association Legal Committee, Jalal participated in the preparation of advisory papers regarding the draft UAE Commercial Code, the draft UAE Real Estate Law, the draft UAE Civil Procedure Code, the UAE Civil Code, and the Articles of Association of the UAE Institute of Banking and Financial Studies.
Jalal has also frequently cooperated with top-tier international law firms on various local and international legal matters, including Freshfields, Linklaters, Macfarlanes, Reed Smith, Squire Patton Boggs, Sinclair Roche, Simmons & Simmons, and Sherman & Sterling.
- Representing and advising local and international hospitals and health centers regarding tort-based legal disputes.
- Representing and advising local banks in cases involving unpaid commercial debts.
- Representing and advising a UAE ministry in various legal cases.
- Represented and advised a major international engineering and construction company in a dispute relating to the construction of a sewage system in Abu Dhabi valued at over US$100,000,000.
- Represented an international engineering consultancy company in a legal dispute involving the enforcement of an arbitration agreement entered into with a developer.
