Practice in Iraq

Al Tamimi & Company announced the establishment of its Iraq Law practice shortly after the war in June 2003. The Coalition Provisional Authority opened Iraq to unprecedented foreign direct investment in many sectors the Iraqi economy and industry.

With the expansion of the Iraq Law practice to three local lawyers with the regional support of the entire team, Al Tamimi & Company opened its first office in Baghdad and is pleased to act for a variety of clients including multinational corporations, Iraqi Government contractors, and international law firms. Through the Iraq Law practice, the firm is able to provide clients a full range of business law legal services to deal with the business opportunities and challenges of doing business in Iraq including:

  • Establishing and licensing of businesses in Iraq
  • Reactivation of previous business presence in Iraq, including branches and representative offices
  • Investment, privatization and participation in reconstruction of Iraq
  • Commercial agencies, distributorships, licensing and franchising
  • Projects: infrastructure, oil & gas, power
  • Litigation and settlement with respect to previous claims
  • Banking & finance
  • Protection of intellectual property rights, including trademarks, copyrights and patents
  • Maritime trade & insurance
  • Property
  • Taxation and customs duties
  • Labour & employment
  • Localisation/standardisation of agreements and documents
Given the difficult security situation and challenge of communications in Iraq, matters for the Iraq Law practice are generally coordinated through Al Tamimi & Company’s head office in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, which has been heralded by many as the regional gateway to Iraq.
