Nick O’Connell (Senior Associate, Technology, Media & Telecommunications) was recently invited to speak at an ‘outreach session’ hosted by the DIFC Commissioner of Data Protection. Nick spoke on the use, by entities registered in the Dubai International Financial Centre, of off-shore personal data processors. With reference to topical case studies involving off-shore processors such as cloud-storage providers, sanctions-screening service providers and centralised corporate group ethics hotlines, Nick outlined the process for determining whether such transfers might be compliant with the DIFC Data Protection Law. The event, part of the Commissioner’s role in promoting and educating the relevant public about data protection law and compliance, was well-attended by in-house legal and compliance specialists from a variety of DIFC registered entities. Other speakers included the Commissioner, Ms Raja Al Mazrouei and the key data protection specialist in the DIFC Authority’s legal team, Ms Camelia Quinnell.
