Health insurance cover for dependants is now mandatory for the issue and renewal of iqamas

The Council for Cooperative Health Insurance (CCHI) has announced that the provision of health cover for all members of the resident worker’s family is a basic condition of the iqama being issued or renewed for workers in the private sector and their dependants.

Employers are required to make provision for health care cover for employees and their dependants from the point of their arrival in the Kingdom, and are solely responsible for paying the insurance premium.  The CCHI has warned that an employer who has failed to subscribe to insurance cover or to pay the insurance premium for each of its employees and their dependants will be required to pay all premiums due in addition to a fine for each individual for whom cover is mandatory.  Employers may also be forbidden from recruiting workers for a temporary or permanent period.
